Great for interviews but no manual settings

Aug 25, 2015

Great powerful audio when paired with a decent Lav mic. I'd give it five stars if there was a way to control the levels manually. Plugging the receiver into the hotshoe of my VG30 greyed out the camera's onboard manual levels. The unit seems to do a good job of automatically setting levels - but for 5 stars I'd prefer to have some control over input levels. Well, I could not figure out how to set it manually, anyway. So if anyone else can figure ... Show More

Leaves you wanting more..

Jan 31, 2016

This is a great idea but executed horribly by Sony. *No manual control leaves the volume SCREAMING loud. You hear everything like the postal delivery guy delivering mail 2 blocks away. It's way too much gain with no way to control the level. Hoping for a firmware update to offer manual control and a chance to tame this beast. Better hope your talent doesn't raise their voice from a whisper because it will distort. *Hiss is definitely a problem. D... Show More

A great little problem solver for Sony's hot shoe interface.

Mar 24, 2017

I have two Sony cameras that are really small and very high quality that I typically use for multi-cam weddings: an RX-100 (an older one with the proprietary Sony hot shoe) and an FDR-AX100, also with the proprietary hot shoe. I shot a wedding in Europe and I was severely limited in what equipment I could take with me but I needed a way to record FOH audio directly to the AX100 set up way back in the balcony. This is the smallest wireless mic tha... Show More

Works Great

May 13, 2019

This microphone is superior to the built-in microphone of my Sony 6000. I particularly like the wireless feature as it means Im not tethered to a cord. You dont actually have to wear it, you can place it somewhere near you, although the sound quality improves the closer it gets. You do have to be careful handling it or what surface you put it to avoid transmitting contact noise into the microphone. As an added benefit, it comes with two sets of e... Show More

It DOES work with RX10

Dec 2, 2015

OK, after couple of hours of frustration and preparing my speech for B&H's return personnel, I finally figured out how to make it work on RX10. As per Sony's website it doesn't work in 5.1ch mode, only Single or Mono. Also, the final piece to my struggle is that camera has to be switches into video mode (via dial on the left) in order for the Receiver piece to power on. Once on, you can move around into other modes. Sound quality from the remote ... Show More

Switch broken, new in package

Oct 9, 2018

Sony sent this microphone as a gift when ordering a new camcorder. I didn't use it right away, but when I finally removed it from the package, the switch was broken on the piece that attaches to the camera. Sony wouldn't replace it because I waited too long to open the package. I pulled the top off and removed the broken switch parts and cut down the case a bit and now use a toothpick to move the switch, or you can just leave it on 5.1 or whateve... Show More

Best Wireless Mic option for Sony Camcorders

Feb 7, 2016

I have owned and tried many wireless microphones from ancient Azden ones, through Ampridge ones, this is the best option for convenience and cost. The powered nature of Sony's hot shoe means you only have to have one charged AAA battery for the transmitter. It's small size makes it convenient to transport and it's quality is as good as any other Bluetooth Mic to be found. So, while a $1,100 Sennheiser AVX Digital Wireless Microphone is certainly ... -20 hiss/hum in background when used with A7sII

Nov 6, 2015

If you want good wireless mic audio with your A7SII don't use this unit, go with the UWP-D setup instead. When video is imported into Final Cut you have to use the hiss remover to get rid of it. The background hiss is at nearly -20db!! And you cannot turn the gain down in the A7sII menus when this unit is connected. Called Sony tech support and they said it could be the processing of the bluetooth signal causing the hum and there is no known fix. The positives to this system it's sooooo small.... Put quality of audio is such so poor, I am returning it and getting the UWP-D system instead.

Easy to use. Easy to break?

Sep 29, 2014

I use this with my Sony RX100 MK2 camera for industrial videos. I didn't want to spend a fortune, and the price is certainly right! I have this paired with a RODE NTG2 via an xlr-to-3.5 mm cable. It sounds great, is easy to use and w-a-y better than having to sync up separate video and audio in post. My only caveat: be careful. If dropped or stepped on, both the transmitter and receiver look like they may not survive. Not that the construction is flimsy, but I would worry about it in a rough-and-tumble production environment.

Very Useful for a Stills Shooter

Nov 6, 2014

If you are a stills shooter who shoots the odd video interview this is a very simple to use and extremely useful accessory to have in the bottom of your stills kit. Its slightly thinner sounding than the Sony UWP-D, but you could, if needed, hide it anywhere in the scene and get some interesting audio, its so tiny!It works flawlessly with my A7S, A7R and RX10. Please note, it definitely is compatible with the RX10 so please disregard the other review here in this forum, he either has a defective mic or camera!

Better than nothing

Jul 23, 2015

It's very useful for A6000 owners (since an audio jack doesn't exist), unless you want high quality audio. There is a bunch of high end hissing noise that I can't remove with EQ's because it spans so many frequencies that I end up cutting all of the high end. I haven't tried it yet with an external lav plugged into the transmitter. Maybe this will give me better results. The idea of it is great, and I really wanted to like it, but it really lacks in quality. I highly disagree with most of the other reviews.

Good Buy on Wireless Mic -- with on exception

Nov 8, 2017

B&H is great to work with. The ECM-W1M wireless mic arrived when promised, and the cost was excellent. FYI, though, the printed instructions--a large paper--has many languages, just none of the ENGLISH! Needed to go to Sony and pull up the instructions, scrape the English text and paste into a document and print it. Very clunky way to get the instructions! Otherwise, all was excellent and we'll be buying from B&H again--just will check for English language manuals, etcetera first.

Piece of Junk

Sep 15, 2019

The audio quality of this microphone is completely unusable. The hissing noise is so overwhelming that you cannot focus on the person speaking. Unfortunately, I did not keep the original packaging, so B&H will not allow me to return the unit. Now Im stuck with a $160 paperweight. Lesson learned...never again.

1 week delivered via FedEx. -It's good for the Long Rang-Video(Up to 100meters long). -Easy to contact the interviewer-talking and listen Wirelessly But It catches all disturbing audio- I recommend to buy another additional Mic to plug in this W1M. I can't use 5.1 mix mode with my Sony A6000.

A6000 works!

Jul 9, 2014

This product does work pretty well. As another viewer mentioned there is a slight hum, but I'm using this with a Samson wireless system plugged into the top transmitter jack to overcome that. I think with this device I can finally stop using a camcorder/camera system and just carry my A6000.

The receiver cannot be repaired

Oct 17, 2015

I bought the product for 2 months only, and the switch is broken. (become loose, always fall to off and cannot be set to 5.1ch/mono/single) The device is brought to Sony's service center and they say the product cannot be repaired because there is no way to open the receiver component.

Better than expected

Jul 16, 2017

I tested on a sidewalk, the max distance can be up to 120 meter (400ft), face to face, or I can see the transmitter. But, if you wear the transmitter on your chest and turn your back to the receiver, than the distance reduced to about 60 meter (200 ft). I'm very happy about the result.

Mine was had a broken switch right out of the box. Because it came free with the camcorder I bought, I had no use for it and I didn't open the box until it was out of warranty and now they won't do anything about it!!! By the way it came straight from Sony, not B&H photo.

Nice mic

Dec 26, 2015

I was so excited with this wireless mic capability. but can only be used with a multi interface shoe only. it would be nice if Sony will release an adapter to allow the use of active interface shoe as well. because I also have a camcorder that have AIS.

Good enough

Jul 19, 2018

Bought for Sony Alpha ILCE-6000. Works well for single mode only (as expected). Has some quiet white noise. But i think it can be due to transmission issues or mic problem (i`m using hands-free one) Except this small issue, totally recommended.

Good Sound

Jun 6, 2014

This wireless mic works well when hot shoes to my Sony A7 Camera. I tried plugging a Mono lav into it and it makes a humming static noise on the audio. It's good to use for a translator or a two camera shoot when you need to mic up an extra person.

Does not work with Sony HDR-CX900

May 17, 2015

I really wanted this system to work with my Sony HDR-CX900. However, the audio quality was not very good. There was a prevalent hiss in the audio recording which could be easily reduced without damaging the recorded voice portions of the file.
