Beautiful
I bought these headphones primarily for my comfort on regular trans-Pacific flights. As promised, I experienced excellent ambient noise reduction, particularly the droning engine noise. It was even nice to use them for only noise-cancellation, with no music, though my ears got tired of the presence of headphones more quickly that way. The best part is turning on some music, closing your eyes, and flipping on the noise cancellation. The world arou... Show More

The headphones come with a ministereo jack and an airplane plug and a good case. The noise-cancelling requires an AAA battery that is inserted in one of the headphones. The cord is nicely detachable if you just want the noice-cancelling and no music. E.g. when sleeping. They do not cover the ears completely, but are very efficient in noise-cancelling of everyday background noise. I use the noise-cancelling effect for listening to radio and music ... Show More

Can you hear me now?
The answer is no and that's a good thing in this case. I have never tried NC headphones before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But let me tell you, these are the bomb! Or rather, the absence of a bomb. I sit near our server room where there is a constant drone. I also work in a cubicle forest with some very chatty folks. Well, I put these on and the world around me just disappeared -- and I didn't even have any music playing yet! The sound is g... Show More

Not too shabby
I use the headphones primary in a server room at work, but also at home when my spouse is watching a TV show I don't particularly care for, and also when infrequently flying. I found that the advertised 18dB active noise cancellation at 150Hz is pretty good. That is, AC hum in the server room is pretty well quieted. But, I can still hear conversations, TV shows, and the scream of high-speed server fans. The over-ear design (not an around the ear ... Show More

Now I'm ready to take that trip!
I haven't tried those more expensive noise-cancelling headphones before but after trying this one, I don't see any reason why you had to. This does the job. I tried it one quiet night when I was close to our furnace and it totally masked the small rumbling noise being generated.I was just an arms lenght away. Had to remove it from my ears and put it back on in the process to totally hear the difference and it's such an amazing little thing. That'... Show More

As good as hoped for
Bought these headphones specificly for a long flight. I wore them for 8 hours straight. Very pleased with the results. If you expect them to block 100% of the noise you will be disappointed. I don't think there is anything available that does that. However, just putting on the headphones reduced the noise considerably, just due to the solid construction and the good seal with the ear. Turning them on gets rid of background noises like fans, motor... Show More

Not bad but could be even better!
use them at work (cube), while travelling, sometimes at homeGreat at cancelling out noise that is further away. Still ambiant noise audible i.e. conversations of colleagues though quite muted. Thus could be better at completely cancelling noise though I have no comparisson but $ headphone tha claim to cancel noise and do not.I can hear a thumping, throbbing, vibration noise if there is no audio played cause by the NC system and I do not like that ... Cheaper in comparison but not perfect!
Use it at work, travel, home trying to eliminate cube conversations or background noise. Initially works great and you can really hear a difference once the NC is switched on. Music is great and at a certain volume level you cannot hear anything around you. Lower volume levels mute the ambiant noise i.e. conversations though you can still hear people talk though very muted. No absolute silence. In addition, there is a throbbing, thumping, vibrati... noise cancelling failed after 2 days
The sound of this headphone was great (with noise cancelling activated only) but the famous noise cancelling failed after 2 days the power on off was blinking and a noise was repeating infinitely. I think the headphone is recording in a buffer the sound before to process it but there is a bug and the headphone was unusable. I had no choice to return it. The sound was still working without the power on but the sound is not very good. I started to ... Show More

Stopped working after 2 days, playing a noise infinitely.
The headphone was good for 2 days. Even if I noticed that the sound was stopping when I was walking with (the sound was stopping easily by tapping the ear), the sound was good when I was sitting. But suddenly when I was sitting on the bed and listening music, with noise cancelling On, the headphone entered into an infinite loop playing the same noise and noise and noise again.. I removed the battery to see if I could reset it. but no..it is crazy... Show More

Great value for money
The key thing to note about noise cancellation is to understand how it works. Most noise cancellation systems are tuned to cancel out droning, repetitive white noise such as caused by trains and planes. They don't cancel out too many other sounds that you might actually want to hear. With this in mind, these JVC headphones do a great job at reducing (not completely eliminating - very few things will do that) noise while on the train or long fligh... Show More

Effective, good value
My only other headphones are a pair of Sennheiser HD 598s; I prefer full range loudspeakers to any headphones so I can't provide a critical analysis. I bought them primarily for travel. The JVCs seem to have an easier time with my iPod. They also have very good bass. They do a good job at canceling ambient noise. On trains, they eliminate it almost entirely, allowing me to listen to classical music. On a plane they get rid of enough of it that I ... Show More

Brilliant
I bought these in NYC before flying home to Sydney, Australia. Now that's long longhaul. I have a small head (I wear childrens' eye glasses) and these headphones fitted perfectly. The ear pads were comfortable for use over many hours - six to SFO, 14 to SYD. I slept for 10 hours straight over the Pacific and didn't hear a thing, not even the takeoff or dinner trolley. The battery lasted most, but not all, of the journey (I had a replacement in th... Show More

Great value for the money!!!
For $, you get bass, treble, and mid-range that rival a lot of the headphones for over twice the price(Think Bose QC15, Dr Dre Beats, Sony, etc) Other reviewers have complained about the cord(length of it and the fact it can be removed from the headphone)I found the smaller cord(4ft) way more useful than having a longer cord and being unpluggable from the headphone itself means if and when it breaks, you don't throw away the whole headset, just r... Not the best, but reasonably priced
I bought these for use on the plane while traveling. I have experience with the earlier model of Bose Quiet Comfort 15's and thought they were amazing. I didn't want to spend 300 dollars so I read reviews and opted for the JVCs for best all around features. I bought the JVCs for the strong reviews, detachable cord, over the ear style and semi hard carry case. The result is ok but not great. The audio sound seems imbalanced.. more on the right tha... Not for Classical Music Lovers
I get this product to listen to my Android phone on the road to work. It has a good balanced frequency response. Noise reduction function is OK. It was defined as 85% noise reduction. That's quite acceptable for comfort. However, there is one important thing I have to mention. Especially it is seen while listening to classical music. When noise cancellation is ON, there is a problem of sound quality especially at medium frequencies while listenin... Show More

Great Purchase
I purchased these headphones for an upcoming airplane ride - and they did not disappoint! It is amazing how much of a difference they made for me. I will admit that I had done quite a bit of research prior to this purchase, and was leaning more towards the Sony headphones, but after reading literally hundreds of other peoples' comments (THANK YOU ALL!) I chose the JVC headphones. Although I am an adult, I have a small head, so finding a pair of h... Show More

Pretty darn good
These are my first pair of over-the-ear headphones. First and most importantly, the audio quality is absolutely excellent and, in my opinion, lacks for nothing.I will say, though, that manufacturers should accurately label them as ambient noise canceling because while they do a great job of minimizing ambient noise--and I took them on a flight and they did a heck of a job reducing engine noise--you can still hear non-ambient noises quite clearly.... Enter another world !
I use these headphones all the time, in the bus, plane, subway, working... It's my new addiction : silence ! The noise cancellation works well enough for me, we don't really hear lound noises anymore, basses to high enough frequencies are nearly completely deleted. When you don't listen to music, you can unplug the jack and only keep the noise cancellation which is very nice for concentration. I have worn them for hours, and only got my ears a bi... Show More

Needs a little more side tension
First thing - great noise canceling, period. Second thing - could be a little tighter on your head. If you apply a little pressure to the outside, you get the best result. This could be common to all headphones, I simply don't know. Otherwise, they come highly recommended, especially for the price. Third thing - while they cancel the background buzz, and hum, they also have great music quality. Just plug in your ipod or whatever, and you have the... Show More

JVC HA-NC250 Great for the price
I bought these for my wife mainly for long airplane flights. I already have a pair I bought 6 years ago and I am very happy with them, they have worn well. They have solid noise cancelling, probably around 70% of aircraft noise. Features I like are: (1) use AAA battery, not rechargeable, so when flat just swap in a spare battery I always carry. (2) still work when battery is flat, but obviously no noise cancelling. (3) nice case with handy mesh p... Show More

Great Value and really work
I am a semi-pro sound engineer running live sound at my church and other local venues. At times I need to monitor a specific source and not have ambient sound interfering. These worked great. The sound from the bass amp was loud enough for me to feel, yet I could monitor a vocal or piano source clearly. The noise cancelling works best at lower frequencies like the background sound of HVAC. I think they would work very well in airplanes. They do n... Show More

Cancel out the choo-choo!
I bought these phones to listen to music and podcasts on my iPhone while train commuting. It's a terrific set of headphones with good clear bass response. The noise-cancelling can be turned on and off with a switch located on one earpiece. While it doesn't completely cancel out the noise (trains can be really noisy!), it does a good enough job that one can easily concentrate on the audio and 'lose' the extraneous sounds. The unit folds flat and c... Show More

Clear sound and comfortable
I compared three sets of headphones by listening to them each for a couple of days and decided to buy this one. The other two were both Sony: - MDR-NC40 Noise-Cancelling Dynamic Stereo Headphones by Sony - MDR-NC60 - Noise-Cancelling Stereo Headphones by Sony I found the sound quality on the NC40's to be sub-standard, when compared to the other two. So that pair was out. It was a close call between these JVCs and the NC60 - but ultimately decided to go with the JVCs: the sound quality was basically identical - but I find the physical fit of the JVCs to be more comfortable. I really like these!
